Sandra "Sandy" Silberstein was born in 1948. She received her Bachelor of Arts from State University of New York, Stony Brook before coming to the University of Michigan, where she received her Master of Arts (1971) and Ph.D. (1982) in Linguistics. While working on her doctorate and working as a teaching assistant, Silberstein joined the Graduate Employee's Organization (GEO), a labor union serving the university's Graduate Student Instructors and Graduate Student Staff Assistants. She went on to become president of the organization and would help the organization become the graduate employees official bargaining unit in 1975.

Since 1982 Silberstein has been teaching at the University of Washington.
