Biography

In 1909 David Stucky founded the Detroit Rescue Mission Ministries (DRMM), originally called the Detroit City Rescue Mission. The organization offered food, shelter, and church service to the homeless of Detroit. While the organization operated throughout most of the year, Thanksgiving and Christmas were particularly busy, with hundreds of meals being handed out during the holidays. In 1943, Stucky died, passing on leadership of the organization to his son, Obed.

While the DRMM continued offering food and shelter to Detroit’s homeless population, the organization expanded its services and locations significantly in the 1980s and 1990s, under the leadership of president Donald DeVos. During this time period the organization built the Genesis House I and II, Wildwood Ranch, Donald F. DeVos Ministry Center, Christian Guidance Center, and more. While some of these simply served as permanent housing, others had more specialized purposes. The Genesis House I and II served as facilities for young mothers and their children to prepare for life on their own. Buildings like Oasis served as an emergency shelter option, as well as a place for homeless veterans to get assistance. Some of these new structures contained libraries and computer labs, allowing users of facilities to gain new skills.

In 1998 Chad Audi joined the organization and served as the CEO, before becoming president following the passing of Donald DeVos in 2002. Audi continued the expansion of the organization as the DRMM added more housing for low-income mothers, children, and also veterans. Many of the Mission’s existing locations were improved. For example, the Wildwood Ranch became home to the Youth Challenge Course to give children of the area opportunities for leadership development. As of 2016, Chad Audi continues to serve as the president of the Detroit Rescue Mission Ministries. The organization provides a large positive impact on the Detroit Metropolitan Area community.

Projects and Programs 1987-2011 [series] (3.5 linear feet)

The Projects and Programs series contains materials related to the various undertakings of the Detroit Rescue Mission Ministries, primarily during the 1990s and 2000s. In contrast to the administrative records, the Projects and Programs series covers more of the day to day operations and those pertaining to specific buildings and projects. Programs run by the organization such as Women’s Day, Youth Services, among others document the planning and promotion that built up to events themselves. Meetings held by employees of buildings and programs discuss challenges faced by the groups. Records of buildings report on the users and staff, but also focus on the services offered by the DRMM.

One area of interest within the series is the Employee Work Journals. These are handwritten notes from employees working in various Detroit Rescue Mission Ministries run shelters, with updates on job duties. Employees wrote down the types of work they had done each day and also offered updates on the people that were utilizing the programs and housing options.

Publicity 1910-2016 [series] (9 linear feet, 1 oversize folder, 12.15 GB)

The Publicity series contains material that was used to promote the organizations projects and programs to the community. News articles within the series offer stories on the organization's projects and goals, which were published by various newspapers and online. There are also certificates that were presented to the Detroit Rescue Mission Ministries to celebrate some of their accomplishments. These certificates came from the city of Detroit, the state of Michigan, and political figures such as Michigan Governor Jennifer Granholm. A large portion of printed materials are arranged by the year (or in some cases by decade) and contain general flyers, brochures, newsletters, and other printed material.

Also included are video and audiocassettes with recordings of news stories promoting the projects of the organization, interviews with employees, and promotional videos used in programs. The audio recordings are largely topical, but also contain some examples radio advertising.

Photographs, slides, and negatives of the organization comprise the largest portion of the series. While some of the photographs are arranged by subject, most are unidentified. The latter depict various projects, programs, and locations. These images document the people who used the services of the Detroit Rescue Mission Ministries, as well as the organization's buildings and housing facilities.
