Davis, Carolyne K. [series]
The records of Carolyne K. Davis document both the wide range of her responsibilities as associate vice president as well as her professional interests and activities outside of the university, particularly in the areas of nursing, health sciences, and women's issues. Davis succeeded John Romani as associate vice president for academic affairs in 1975. She had been dean of the School of Nursing since 1973. Her files include some materials dating as far back as 1967 but are primarily from the years 1975 to 1981, at which time she resigned her post as associate vice president to accept a position with the Department of Health and Human Services in Washington, D.C.
Davis's records are divided into three subseries: Topical Files; Schools and Colleges Files; and Legislative Files. The Topical Files and the Schools and Colleges Files contain correspondence, reports, reviews, and budget planning materials regarding the many units that were under Davis's jurisdiction. The Topical Files are also a strong source of information regarding Davis's participation in professional organizations. The Legislative Files series contains information on the University's relations with Congress and the Michigan legislature from 1977 to 1980, primarily with regard to budget appropriations and federal regulation activities in the areas of health sciences and nursing.

Dougherty, Edward A [series]
The records of Edward A. Dougherty, assistant to the vice president for academic affairs from 1974/75 until 1981/82, consist of two subseries: Topical Files; and Schools and Colleges, Search and Review Files. The latter comprises the bulk of his records. The Topical Files are limited to committee materials and cover three topics from 1977 to 1982: the China Task Force, the Subcommittee on the Organization of the Medical Complex, and the Periodic Health Appraisal Unit (PHAU) Advisory Committee. The Schools and Colleges, Search and Review Files document the process of selection and hiring of deans, directors, department heads, and administrators as well as internal and external reviews of the programs of various schools and colleges in the period 1971/72 to 1981/82. Because of their confidential nature, material regarding searches for or evaluations of unit heads have been moved and are restricted for thirty years from their date of creation.

English, Richard A. 1972-1979 [series]
The records of Richard A. English (7 linear ft.) consist of one series: Topical Files, 1972-1979. English served as associate vice president for academic affairs from 1974 until 1981, when he resigned to return to his academic position in the School of Social Work. English's responsibilities for coordination of the academic service units and minority student support services are well documented, as is his involvement with the Graduate Employees Organization (GEO) and the Netherlands Visiting Professorship. In addition, there are a number of folders regarding the Evaluation and Planning Project, undertaken from 1975 to 1977. The purpose of the project was to promote units' systematic planning of program changes, enrollment, and affirmative action.

Williams, Robert L. 1950-1974 [series]
(11.5 linear feet)
The records of Robert L. Williams (11.5 linear ft.), who served as administrative dean in the Office of Academic Affairs from 1962 to 1974, consist of one subseries: Topical Files, 1950-1974. Prior to becoming administrative dean, Williams was assistant dean of faculties from 1951 until 1962, assistant to the provost from 1945 to 1951, and assistant registrar from 1936 to 1945. The files include materials from Williams's tenure as administrative dean as well as from his tenure as assistant dean of faculties. The records also contain information on the early years of the Office of Academic Affairs and its predecessor offices. As administrative dean, Williams assisted in formulating academic plans and policies and oversaw special studies.
The majority of Williams's records reflect his involvement with committees and organizations dedicated to communication and cooperation among institutions of higher education both within the state of Michigan and among the universities comprising the Big Ten. In addition, Williams's files contain a large amount of material regarding the Reserve Officers' Training Corps (ROTC) on campus in the 1960s and 1970s. For further information regarding Robert Williams's career, researchers should see a small collection of his papers that is cataloged separately.

Romani, John H. 1955-1977 [series]
(12 linear feet)
The files of John H. Romani, associate vice president for academic affairs from 1971 to 1974, consist of one subseries of Topical Files, 1955-1977 (ca. 12 linear feet). Romani was a professor and associate dean in the School of Public Health before becoming associate vice president for academic affairs. As associate vice president he was responsible for coordinating international programs, the Opportunity Program, and the faculty-student exchange with Tuskegee Institute as well as overseeing academic service activities, including admissions, financial aid, orientation, registration and records, scheduling, and evaluation and examination. In addition, he represented Vice President Smith on Division of Health Sciences committees.
Topics with extensive documentation in Romani's files include Committees (mostly health-related), Office of Financial Aid, Ford Foundation Grants, Opportunity Program, Search and Review Committees (mostly health-related), and the University Center for Adult Education. The Ford Foundation Grants subseries document the university's use of two grants given by the Ford Foundation in 1961 and 1966 totaling 7.5 million dollars for teaching and research on the non-Western world. Additional documentation of the Ford Foundation grants is located in the Supplemental Files subgroup.
