GRIFFITH'S MIRACLE OF ST. MENAS
I here present my revision of the Old Nubian Miracle of St.
Menas, originally published by F. Ll. Griffith in The Nubian Texts
of the Christian Period, Abhandlungen der Koniglich Preussischen
Akademie der Wissenschaften, Jahrgang 1913, philosophischhistorische Classe (Berlin) 6-15. The text occupies pages 1-17 of
British Museum Or. MS. 6805, for a description of which see
Griffith 6 and E.A.W. Budge, Texts Relating to Saint Mena of Egypt
and Canons of Nicaea in a Nubian Dialect, with Facsimile (London
1909) 13-14.
My revision is based upon the complete set of photographs in
Budge as well as upon an autoptic collation which I carried out in
the British Museum in September 1980. It appears that Griffith
relied solely on the plates in Budge and did not consult the original: see the commentary below on 4.3-4, 10, 11; 6.4; 8 (page number)
In preparing this edition, I have followed the guidelines
observed in my revisions of the Lectionary (Griffith's Old Nubian
Lectionary, Papyrologica Castroctaviana 8 [Rome/Barcelona 1982])
and the Stauros-Text ("Griffith's Stauros-Text," StudPap 22 [1983]
75-119). The abbreviations employed are those utilized in
"Griffith's Stauros-Text"; in addition, note that B. = Budge's
facsimile edition.
