Indeed, the TnLTrnpnrTal often make penthemeral reports to higher officials (e.g. P. Oslo III 89, 90, 91, PSI VII 735, BGU II 478, U. and D. Hagedorn, P. CoZl. Youtie I 31), which frequently contain the phrase ylvovTrLL Tf T Eve(nipou/nuepLa').4 Clearly, a form of the word TtEv~O~Ta po does not in itself attest the penthemeros corv4e. This, in turn, will help to explain two other papyri which have seemed to attest the penthemeros corvee outside the Arsinoite Nome. P. Giss. I 64--with the phrase nrapd XOWaTERnTL4EXT1cV X6Yov nevOnui(pwv)--and SB VI 9626--with the phrase [To6~] ILuOXa[vTaI] LOL REVaOn5Upou [TWiv] [xco]WUTLXH[]V K t 6L)0pUXLx0uv py[v]--should now be read in this light. They do not refer to the penthemeros corvee, which does not occur outside the Arsinoite Nome, but instead to penthemeral reports. The present papyrus (along with P. Oxy. XLIX 3475) may also be useful in helping to clarify what has appeared to be some kind of relationship between the penthemeros and naubion corvees. J.G. Milne suggested long ago that the penthemeros corvie corresponded to five naubia of work at the rate of one naubion performed daily.6 This theory was rejected by P.J. Sijpesteijn, who argued that the penthemeros was entirely distinct from naubion corv4e.7 Since Sijpesteijn's book, two papyri have been published which indicate again some sort of relationship between a factor of five and the naubion duties. P. Oxy. XXXVIII 2847 says that 1XOaTOC TCr 4 The phrase is usually restored neve(nupt~ci), although the Hagedorns print rTEvO(iLpou), loc. cit.
