- Tax register, recording day by day the collection of money taxes (poll tax and other capitation taxes; land taxes on orchards and vineyards) in the village of Karanis; the "roll" was composed of a succession of sizable pieces which were never joined - this helps to explain how less than a half of this text (that is still some 3500 lines) came to the University of Michigan, while the whereabouts of the rest are unknown. In the first part of the roll, the name of each tax-payer paying the poll-tax is cross-referenced with a page of another register, where taxpayers were listed geographically
