- Description
- Effigy is a relief carving of a human face on a half-round, oval piece of stone. The nose is prominent. Eyes are deep-set and round under high, arching eyebrows. The prominent lips are stylized. Ears are small and stylized. There is a large vertical groove on the back side. The effigy is made of brown sandstone. Nose, lower lip and lower portions of both ears have been restored with painted plaster. (- from Ohio Historical Society's Collection website

- engraved bone -- Harness Mound.
- Decorated bone, possibly from a bear, is very pale brown and gray in color. Sculpted in low relief on the bone are a raven's head and a stylized hand or feathers. The areas in negative relief were painted yellowish red. Each end of the bone has holes drilled on either side and the bone has been hollowed out. There is some pitting and discoloration on the bird's head. -(from Ohio Historical Society website)

- This pipe in effigy (a likeness or representation) of a hawk was excavated from Tremper Mound, a Hopewell culture site located five miles north of Portsmouth in Rush Township, Scioto County. The Hopewell People created the pipe in 0100-0200 AD. The Hawk is represented standing with it's head cocked. The eyes are inlaid with pearl and the feather pattern is carved in detail. This object is held in the Ohio Historical Society Archeology Collection.

- This pipe in effigy (a likeness or representation) of a hawk or eagle was excavated from Tremper Mound, a Hopewell culture site located five miles north of Portsmouth in Rush Township, Scioto County. The Hopewell People created the pipe in 0100-0200 AD. The hawk or eagle is represented standing. The pattern of the bird's feathers is indicated and the pipe is carved from coral limestone.
