Description
Whale fin effigy, carved of cedar and inset with 700 sea otter teeth, mostly molars. Along the edge, canine teeth were used to give a jagged appearance to the sculpture. At the bottom is the representation of a mythological bird. The function of this piece is unknown, but it is likely that it was associated with whaling rituals.

Description
Halibut hooks. These were bent by steaming, and a bone point was attached to one end with wild cherry bark. Most fishhooks were made of western hemlock.

Description
Nazca "estolica" made out of hard wood having on one extreme a copper lance tied with vicuna wool threads and in the handle some figures engraved in bone. It is 53 cm long. They are archaeological pieces.

Necklace made of small pink-ish shell beads, plastic beads in various colors, hollow halves of black nut shells, and clusters of some kind of animal teeth. The necklace is strung on grass fiber. The plastic beads mark the teeth clusters off from the small pink beads. The nut shells are hung on 4 terminating strands in pairs, with two teeth above them.

Garden Knife. Long, narrow, S-shaped metal (iron?) blade set on long wooden handle.
Handle was shortened to transport it from Madagascar to the UMMA.
Collected by H. T. Wright in November 2003, during a National Geographic trip to Madagascar. Notes from H. Wright:
"Obtained by exchange for a new Betsileo knife purchased for 15,000 Malagasy francs ($3.98) with a young man who had inherited the knife and did not know its value or its origin.

Wooden cup painted in red and blue made of a cottonwood root, as are modern Hopi kachina dolls. The geometric design is somewhat suggestive of both ceramic and cloth fabric designs of about the same period.

Roughly worked square, flat piece of wood. One small hole, perhaps for latch, now missing.
No decoration/ carving. Does not fit in opening at top of box. Can merely be placed over it.
Top closure intended to slide on place from a rectangular slot in one side and fit into grooves in the interior of box. Material warping does not allow for insertion.
