Sumner County, Tennessee; 3 7/8" dia. shell gorget. Engraved white shell disks were worn by various prehistoric southeastern peoples as pendants, and many have been discovered on the chests of buried skeletons. Mexican influence is very evident on this gorget. It is particularly apparent in the resemblance between the profiles on this gorget in those drawn in ancient Mexican manuscripts. Description
Sumner County, Tennessee: 3 3/8" diameter engraved shell gorget. Designs engraved on the shell gorgets, or breast ornaments, of Tennessee and neighboring states are limited to certain subjects. These are the scrolled squares set with head of ivory-billed woodpeckers illustrated here, other birds, spiders, rattlesnakes, scallop circles, human faces, and figures of a very Mexican character. Both sexes wore these white ornaments, possibly as symbols
