The skull of a female, age 30 to 40, from the Moundville site. The penetrating cranial lesion is not caused by tuberculosis. Mary Powell, University of Kentucky, cites treponemal disease as the probable cause.

Sites compared are: Moundville (AD 1050-1550), Dickson Mounds (AD 700-1000 and 1000-1350), Point of Pines (AD 1000-1450) and Meinarti (AD 1050-1150 and (1150-1300).
