Sometimes, meseems, your voice no longer shows Harsh intonation, and your laugh has grown All music in the year that now is flown. Sometimes, meseems, your heart has turned a rose, All sweetness. Not remembering the snows, The blight and frosts of winters that are gone. And yet, betimes, the old unwelcome tone Turns the soft poem of your voice to prose, And your heart hardens to a scentless bud. Something within your life has made you rock, O'er which thin earth defeats deep husbandry. Oh, deeper than the guilt of shedding blood, The guilt that taught your gentle soul to mock— Twice guilty that the dole was kept for me!
