GIBRALTAR AT DAWN

UP and over the sea we came, And saw the dayspring leap in flame. Full in face Gibraltar lay,Crouching, lion-like, at bay,Stern and still and battle-scarred, Grimly keeping watch and ward. Hark, and hear the morning gun Salute time's admiral, the sun, While the bleak old storied keep, That hath never known to sleep, Golden'neath the morning lies, Sentinelled with memories, Heard when, rolling from afar, The hoarse waves thunder, "Trafalgar!"
AT SEA, December, 1898.
