47o THE AMERICAN JEWESS. adequately the tortures imposed by that double calamity, everlasting poverty and incurable sickness, for the latter insures the existence of the former. Helpless, healthless, homeless! These terrible tidings loosen the purse-string even of a miser. Sex and sect, creed-bound or faith-free, young or old, each and everyone harboring a conscience ought to enlist his name as a contributor to the Montefiore Home, which, honoring a dead philanthropist, has cause sufficient to rear living ones. The officers and Directors for I896 are: Jacob H. Schiff, President; Louis Gans, Vice-President; Hon. Isidor Straus, Treasurer; Raphael Ettinger, Hon. Secretary. Directors: Lyman G. A series of informal concerts have been inaugurated by the Society, which have now become a permanent feature of the Institution. Two concerts are given every month. " These entertainments have proved a great boon to the patients, many of whom leave their beds so as to participate, and others, again, whose lives are spent in wheeling chairs, consider it as one of their greatest privileges to be among their fellow-sufferers and be entertained by those who so kindly volunteer their services and add so much to their happiness."
