Thomas Clarkson ALS to John Gibson, August 24, 1823
African American History Collection, 1729-1966 (bulk 1781-1865) [Box 2, Folder 16a]
Penrith. 24. August. 1823 Sir! I am now at this Place, and intended to have gone forward to Kendal, and from thence to Liverpool, but, on recollecting the Services, which you and your little Committee at Whitehaven have done to our common Cause, I have resolved on Tuesday Morning next to get into the Mail from this Place and to be at White- haven on the same Evening, for no other Purpose, than to thank you personally for your Services, and to inform you of the Plan of operations, which our London-Committee have resolved upon for the ensuing year. I must leave you the next Morning. I shall probably dine, on my arrival at Whitehaven, at the Inn, where the Coach goes to, but shall most likely sleep at Mr George Millars - If your Committee shoud consist only of a few Persons, I should like to meet them; but no other Persons: and this in a private Room either of your own House, or of some other Friend, belonging to the Committee. I am, sir, with my best Wishes- Yours truly Thomas Clarkson
