Newark (N.J.) Jany. 6. 1821 - Mrs. Rosa. Stone Respected Madam : I have the pleasure of acknowledging the recpt of your letter of 21t. ult, covering a Ten dollar Bill as a further contribution for the benefit of the African School under the care of the Synod of New york & New Jersey. Having been prevented from attending the last meeting of the Board of Directors, I am not able to give you a particular account of the present state of the school; in general however, I am happy to inform you that the pupils now in the institution (8 or 9 in number,) continue by their exemplary piety & rapid improvement in learning to gladden the hearts of their benefactors & to give new evidence that Africans have capacity to learn as well as hearts to love our common Lord & Saviour = Whether amid

- From Hornblower, Treasurer of the "b. dir. of the A.S." to Stone of the Female African Society of Union, Ohio. Acknowledges receipt of her letter "covering a ten dollar Bill as a further contribution for the benefit of the African School under the Care of the Synod of New York & New Jersey." States that "Africans have capacity to learn as well as hearts to love." Disappointment Missouri entered the Union as a slave state, discusses the impact of Christian schools on the colored populace, like the Female African Society in Union, Ohio.
