Sir, I do myself the honor to enclose you a Copy of a Dissertation on Slavery, with a proposal for the judicial abolition of it in this Commonwealth which I have taken the Liberty to inscribe to the General Assembly of Virginia. To this essay I have been stimulated by motives, which to an enlightened Legislature will, I flatter myself, neither stand in need of illustration, or apology. The Representatives of a free people, who in the moment of becoming such, have declared that all men are by nature equally free & independent, can not be offended at an attempt to carry so incontestible a moral Truth into practical effect. To weigh, and to remove the objections to the attempt have been the principal objects of my attention in this Essay. Permit
