Thomas Clarkson ALS to Harry Gandy, December 1, 1788
African American History Collection, 1729-1966 (bulk 1781-1865) [Box 1, Folder 30a]
My dear friend! Poor Arnold I found here, on my arrival, in a very disconsolate state: His spirits gone; and in a state of Melancholy and Despair. The next Day would have brought him to Bristol: In this situation I comforted as well as I could, and, to make him easy as well as his Witnesses, I paid for him a small Debt of 12£. I have been since applying to my friends. A meeting will be had by them on Wednesday, when the matter will be taken into Consideration, and, I hope, something farther be done for him. I apprehend the result will be, to open a subscription, to pay all Costs on both sides hitherto incurred, and having thus discharged the Case at the Commons, to push it vigorously at Common Law, where the damages will be twice heavier.
