To his Excellency Sir Guy Carleton K. B. General & Commander of his Majesty's Forces in North America &Ca &Ca &Ca. - The Petition of Dinah Archey Negro humbly sheweth that Your poor petitioner Embarked with her hus band Daniel of Virginia has she says been here five Years & Came in agreeable to his Excellen =cy General Hows Proclamation but was Claim'd by a Certain William Fanay & brought on Shore [has tis?] said been before the Police but no Desici on Neither did said Mr. Fanay shew a Bill of Sale Your poor petitioner therefore humbly prays as Mr. Fanay has taken her pass from her that he may prove his Property which she firmly believes he cannot & Your poor petiti oner as in Duty bound will ever pray &Ca Dinah Archey New York 8th. Augt. 1783

- Petition from a black loyalist for relief from an alleged master. She and her husband came to New York five years ago, presumably as free people, but a man named William Fanncey claimed them as his slaves. He "has taken her pays from her that he may prove his Property which she firmly believes he cannot."
