A list of Free Negroes residing in the Southern District who were either born free purchas'd their time or have been liberated by persons not Members of our Society Pompey . . . Purchas'd his time of Willam Shute Venus . . . . Do. of Docr. Harris Rose . . . . . Do. of Jos. Yeates & Richd. Porter Flora . . . . Do. of Ebonezer Call Nathl. Jackson . Do. of James Penrose - have 2 Children live with their Father who is a Ship Carpenter keeps House in Shippen Street near 3d. Street Judith, Widow of Cuff Johns who pd. £20 - for her freedom, lives with & keeps house for her Brother N. Jackson Lucy Jarrett . . Liberated by Docr. Cadwalader a Widow lives in 5th Steet - on further inquiry it appears this Woman has not been set free, & she keeps a very disorderly house - Phebe Brooks . Liberated by Ann Riche lives with Lucy Jarret, has 1 Child abt. 15 Mo: old Gulloway Smith. Purchas'd her time of the Widow of Capt. Gurney Wall, & her daughter Patty, also now abt. 8 years old, she has another Daughter named Jane about 10 Months old, her Husband gone to Sea & suppos'd to be lost Hannah White Deceas'd - formerly claim'd by James White, who it is said promis'd her Freedom at his decease, but neglected doing it, he let her go from him with her Son Thomas, who is now abt. 15 years of age, & he lives wth. Jos. Marriott. Jas. White's Son now claims him, & this case requires care Cuff Anthony, Had liberty from his Master Isaac Snowden to get his own livelihood, a Tanner & Currier, keeps House his Wife Ruth . . was born free, they have 3 Children, Ann Born 5 Mo: 9. 1776, Charles 10th. Mo: 3d. 1770, Rachel 10 Mo: 7. 1774 Nancy Yeats . . Thomas Yeats her Son - Anty. Fortune , Out at Service & takes care of her Child, moved into the middle District Joseph Head . Born free - keeps house in Spruce Street, Shoemaker by Trade, now Coachman to Henry Hill, keeps Mary Head his wife . Do. - an orderly House, they have 3 Children, Dolly abt. 20, Joseph 16, & Sarah abt. 10 years of age Savannah . . . Free born, lives in a house of her own decently Stephen . keeps House & has a Family in 4th Street a Taylor by Trade, & appears to live comfortably Charles , Freed himself by 8 years Service wth. Wm. Clifton who taught him the Blacksmiths Trade, aged abt. 35 . Rents a Shop, & would do well, if his wife conducted orderly, but she is given to Drink - Amos Miriam, Nichs. Waln Jno. Reynell Wm. Clifton & others Subscribed Money to obtain his freedom, a Smith by Trade, keeps House & is an orderly sober man - Scotland . . . Set free by Francis Trumble, lives in a small house of his & does well Margarett Cox . Purchas'd her own freedom lives in Spruce Street follows Baking & appears to be orderly Cesar Carpenter left free by Wm. Grantham, 53 years of age . . . - have 6 Children 3 of which were born before her Husband his Wife Amelia, her husband bot. her freedom of Thos. Smith for £30 - purchased her time, named Cesar Susannah & Violet {docket:} List of free Negroes residing in the Southern District 22d. of 7 mo: 1782 -
