About the construction

Description: This cross gable transitional Queen Anne/Colonial Revival frame house has a square hipped roof corner tower with round arched windows. A band of fish scale shingles underscores the tower windows and surrounds the Palladian windows in the gables. Cresting appears on the ridge line and a finial caps the tower. The full front porch with side pediment has a raised frame base with short turned rail and is supported by round columns on a stone base. Barn in rear.

Architect/Builder: Elwood Rogers
Context: This National Register house is important for its architecture and its owner's position as a merchant. Built by Elwood Rogers, the home's combination of classical and Queen Anne styling in seen in its corner tower, shingle accents, and variety of windows. The first owner, Charles Guthard, was a Saline Township farmer who later became a self-made businessman. After establishing a hardware business with Adam Hornung (1903-4), he went into partnership with Henry Schroen. The Schaible family occupied the house in the 1920-1940s.
