About the construction

Description
This one story brick commercial building sits on a stone foundation. A flat roof slants toward the rear of the structure. According to an old picture, there was a bracketed cornice topped by a large pediment with cut-out arch design. Presently the cornice line is stepped with a cement cap across the top. There is a multipatterned brick design above ribbon windows on the front facade. A raised floral quoin is found at the top level of the windows. Large plate glass windows flank double recessed front doors.
Date Of Construction
ca.1891
Context
This building was first used as a drug store run by Dr. Charles Unterkircher for 27 years. Dr. Unterkircher bought the drug stock of G.B.Mason and moved it into this building. A picture identifying Unterkircher's Book Store in the early 1900s shows "books" on the west side of the store and probably the drug store on the east side. Ben Uphaus took over the store from 1921 to 1927, selling ice cream and candy. He also provided a waiting room for "Old Maude", the street car which turned around in the alley between this building and the house to the east. In 1927 Uphaus leased the store to Mark Sugden, but retained the radio business in basement. In 1932 the building was remodeled. From 1933 to 1970 Uphaus opened an appliance and electrical shop later run by son, Ralph. It was also occupied by a jeweler, insurance agent, and barber.
