About the construction
- Description
- One story, rectangular, fieldstone mausoleum in the Exotic Revival style. Stepped parapets on east and west facades. Constructed of desert pink, grey, and charcoal colored fieldstone; it has a tiled roof With clerestory windows. The Monroe (east) facade is the main facade, and features double metal doors centered between small, stained glass windows; the inscription "In Hope" carved in a sandstone block below a heart-shaped stone. The windows and doors have stone lintels and sills painted the same color as the tile roof. The edges and the entrance of the Monroe Street facade are accentuated with a line of projecting stones. A pair of stained glass windows highlight the west facade. The building is 30 x 45, and contains space for 88 to 100 burials.

- Architect/Builder
- O. J. McBride Co. for the Washtenaw Mausoleum Company.
- Context
- The mausoluem was built as a chapel as well as a place of burial, hence its large size. This project was accomplished under the supervision of Dr. J. B. Wallace, who was superintendent of the Board of Cemetery Trustees. An identical mausoleum was located in Ann Arbor's Bethlehem Cemetery, but was demolished about 1985. Oakwood Cemetery is located at the corner of W. Michigan Ave. and Monroe Street, and was originally made up of the southeastern section of the present cemetery, which was a gift from Orange Risdon. He made a second gift of land, enlarging the cemetery; and the City of Saline extended it to its present size by the purchase of two sections in 1877 and 1895. This building is listed on the National Register.
