About the construction

Description: This Italianate brick commercial building has an attached band of metal between the first and second stories which extends across 109 W. Michigan. Metal columns on a brick base frame the plate glass window next to a recessed entry. Original bracketed cornice and windows with hooded crowns between capped pilasters have been painted.
Date Of Construction: ca.1872
Context: Somewhat compromised by first story remodeling, the second story retains its Italianate detailing. The building is also significant as a part of Saline's business history. It was a grocery store in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. In 1914 the Masons bought 109 and 111 W. Michigan Avenue from C. F. Smith. They had previously met in a building where the Saline Reporter stands from 1861 until 1864, then on the third floor of a building where the Citizens Bank stands, and since 1914 on the second floor of the present building. The property was paid for within little more than a year from a sizable donation from the ladies of the Eastern Star and donations from members.The Masons occupied the second floor and still own the building. It was also used as a barber shop, theater, and bakery.
