About the construction

Description
Masonry two story commercial building with recessed entry framed by wooden pilasters. The second story is covered with vertical alunimum siding and wooden shuttered windows. Full signage separates the first and second story. Beside double front entry doors is a small wooden door which probably leads to the second level. A line of second story windows fenestrates the west facade.
Date Of Construction
ca.1870
Context
In the 1870's this building housed a hardware business run by John Hull. Mr. Hull grew up on a farm in the area and attended the Union District school and the Normal College in Ypsilanti. He married Flora Sumner, grand-daughter of Orrin Parsons, an early pioneer in the community. He ran a hardware business with L.N.Risdon which became Webb and Hull. His first store was at 103 W. Michigan, later moving to 106 W. Michigan where he was in business for 20 years. When the railroad came to Saline in 1870, Mr. Hull established a shipping business. Later businesses included Henne's Hardware, Limbright & Son Hardware, and Haarer's Quality Market. Paul Tull bought the building in 1952 to house the Saline Reporter. He renovated the front facade ca.1960 for under $1000. Signage by Wayne Adair.
