- Context
- Built by Saline's founder, Orange Risdon. This house has been central to much of Saline history: first election took place here; planning for the school system took place here; the village's first post office and magistrate's court were located in the house; served as the village's first general store; was a tavern for traveler's on the Chicago Road. Said to be one of the stations on the underground railroad. The house was inherited by Orange Risdon's daughter, Mrs. Harriet Risdon Mead, who lived in the house until 1903. Her son, William D. Mead, lived in it until 1921; then it was inherited by Miss Blanche Mead in 1922. Blanche sold it to the City of Saline. Originally located on Risdon Hill in Oakwood Cemetery on W. Michigan Ave. Erwin Schmid moved the house to its present location in 1948, and remodeled it into apartments.
