- Context
- This building is a fine example of Italianate commercial architecture. It is visible on the 1872 Bird's Eye View of Saline. Pray's 1878-79 directory lists John Frank (bakery) "west side Adrian between Chicago and Henry". The 1888 Sanborn labels the structure "bakery and saloon". According to an oral history by Grover Alber, whose grandfather married Frank's daughter, the building operated first as a hotel. After J.A. Alber married Frank's daughter, he became manager of the hotel. They started selling baked goods in the lobby, and gradually converted to a bakery, confectionary store, and ice cream parlor. The beer tap from the saloon was converted to a soda fountain. The Saline Observer was located in the building 1916-1920, and also a Hatchery in the 1940's. Presently it is a law office.
