Context
This building was originally part of the Cool Brother Grain Company operations. It was purchased in 1917 by the (grain) Elevator Division of the Saline Mercantile complex (dealers in grain, coal, flour, and feed). The building contained a 20 ton scale used to weigh livestock and grain. The Sanborn maps show the Lakeshore and Michigan Central Railroad grain elevator to the west of the present building in 1888, 1893, and 1899, but this building does not appear until the 1912 Sanborn. The railroad tracks were located immediately north of the building, therefore the need for the sliding doors. Saline Mercantile operated until 1971, when it was purchased by Gary Girbach and David and Dean Zahn. The entire property on the west side of N. Ann Arbor St. is 1.8 acres.
