Correspondence [series]:

The Correspondence series consists of 4 linear feet of material. Although the series dates from 1979 to 2003, the bulk of the correspondence dates from the mid-1980s to the late 1990s. The vast majority of the correspondence is addressed to either Peter Werbe or generally to the staff of the Fifth Estate , although correspondence is sometimes addressed to individual staff members such as David Watson or Marilyn Werbe. All correspondence has been grouped together to reflect the organizational schemes (or lack of organizational schemes) created by the Fifth Estate itself. Writers such as John Zerzan and Bob Black are well represented in the series. Single letters from Noam Chomsky (July 3, 1985) and Andrei Codrescu (April 24, 1984) are also included. The content of the correspondence varies greatly. Researchers will find letters ranging from short notes asking for samples of the Fifth Estate to lengthy letters debating political theory or current events. The correspondence has been arranged chronologically.

Publishing Material [series]:

The Publishing Material series consists of 2.5 linear feet, including material used in the publication of the Fifth Estate or related publications. The largest grouping of material consists of submissions to the newspaper made in the 1980s and 1990s. The submissions sometimes contain notes and staff member votes on whether the piece should be published. With the exception of two folders labeled “rejected” and “unpublished,” it is sometimes difficult to determine if and when a piece was published in the paper. The series also includes poetry and graphic submissions. Of special note is a large folder of cartoons and poetry by Tuli Kupferberg. The Other Publications subseries consists of material created in the publication of newspapers and magazines related to the Fifth Estate , including the Fifth Estate Newsletter, and Peter and Marilyn Werbe’s Hip Pocket Directory.
