Annual report. [1905]

ANNUAL, REPORT OF THE MUNICILPA BOARD. 275 is in general satisfactory. Its personnel has become rather definitely fixed and( changes are infrequent. Inspection of classes has been reduced to a most satisfactory system. Thlle work of every class is inspected from this office at least once in each week. The greatest possible degree of authlority is given the principals, and teachers are definitely informed that unless their work is kept up to a certain standard they can not llopl)e to retain their p)ositions. Students are carefully selected. All per.)ons presenting themselves for matriculation are required to furnislb substancial evi(lence of responsibility and to possess a proper conception of the objects of the sc]hool. Stenography, typewriting, and bookkeeping are the only special sub)jects taught in these schools. Evening courses in tllese subjects are offered in connection with tlhe Manila school of colmmllerce and are extremiely popular. The work in stenography in particular is mio0ving along ral)i(lly. In the courise of two or three months a fairly well-lqualified class of English stenograplers will have finishled the course and be ready for employment. Attendance is strong an(d steadily increasing. It is dloubtful if it will be allowed to go above 7,0(0). It is believed that with. tle exercise of lproper care inl the selec-, tion of students this numbier will he large enough to include all h11o are l)roperly interested. SI'II.\IA, S1 ' 1 J E"('TS. The present attendance is 257, an(l is composed(l of a high grade of students. The attendance is about equally divided l)etween students from the city and froin tlhe l)rovinces. Some of the most remote provinces in the Islands are represented 1)by a class of students who appear to hlave most definite objects in view. The spirit of the school is excellent. From resources provided entirely 1)w the students a small library has been started, a baseball and football teamn and fife and drum corps have been equipl)ped, and several up-to-date bookcases and a fairly good reference library purchased.
