Redoubt; Charles Clough
- Title
- Redoubt
- Artist
- Charles Clough
- Physical Description
- High-gloss abstract expressionist painting of a large Africa-shaped form in red against black ground. Clough’s unique way of applying paint to the canvas results in a highly articulated and densely textured surface. “In place of the brush and other typical painter's tools, Clough uses an instrument he calls the ‘Big Finger,’ a large balloon-like contraption that he invented to spread poured house enamel on masonite into broad gestural constellations.” (Max Henry, “charles clough,” http://www.artnet.com/magazine_pre2000/reviews/henry/henry2-5-99.asp)

Untitled; Cåndido Portinari
- Title
- Untitled
- Artist
- Cåndido Portinari
- Physical Description
- An abstract painting done in various shades of grays, browns and greens. The background is painted in thick, unblended horisontal strokes. A group of men, one dressed in blue robes and the rest nude, extend their arms and a white flag, possibly in a sign of surrender or possibly for rescue. All are facing away from the viewer except for one, who is much paler than the others and looks quite emaciated. They appear to be floating on a raft but it is difficult to say if they are on water or land.

- Physical Description
- This crayon-manner engraving printed in sanguine depicts a grouping of figures arranged in a celestial space and positioned against clouds. A large female figure draped in cloth dominates the upper portion of the composition. She holds a set of scales in her left hand. Two female figures, one clothed, one nude, gather below at this figure’s sandaled feet in the center left of the composition. The clothed figure holds a palette and paintbrushes while the nude figure holds a mallet and a sculpted portrait of a man’s face. At the bottom right three male figures, one of whom wrestles a snake, appear to be attacking the female figure holding the palette. A clothed figure donning a helmet protects the figure holding the scales in the upper right.

- Physical Description
- On a narrow canvas a background of overlapping, rounded segments of blues, grays, and greens suggests rock. These layers build up to warmer colors, and on the surface of the layers are several shapes executed in white line suggestive of cave-painting. The shapes looks like microscopic organisms and are connected by the nerve-like white lines. As a whole, the visual elements are also suggestive of a seated figure, and the white shapes then appear as organs.

Landscape with Washerwoman; Alessandro Magnasco
- Title
- Landscape with Washerwoman
- Artist
- Alessandro Magnasco
- Physical Description
- This landscape scene has an expansive blue sky in the upper half of the composition contrasted with the dark countryside, painted in hues of dark green and brown, in the lower portion. On the horizon, in between these two areas, is a mountain range with sharp pointed peaks. The forms of the bright white clouds mimick the foliage of the trees.
- There are figures in the foreground area, although the rugged countryside shows no sign of habitation. On the right, two women are shown bending over, washing clothes in a small stream. There is a man sitting next to a laundry basket in the far left corner. A fourth figure, seen from the back only, is placed in the center area of the foreground.
