Mark Kostabi
Physical Description
Line drawing in felt tip marker on ivory ~ 10x13” paper with shading. Woman’s arm and dress filled in completely with black, as well as a pane of the stained glass window that she holds. The wall, pitcher, parts of the woman’s head and shoulder covering and bodice, and cash register have been modeled in stylized “half tone” of zigzag separating white and black; shadows take the form of dense curlicues. The tablecloth bears splotches of black ink that were possibly made by blowing air on wet ink through a straw. The map has been filled in with ink drips and splatters.

Street Scene, Paris [Rue Laffitte (?) ]; James McNeill Whistler

Title
Street Scene, Paris [Rue Laffitte (?) ]
Artist
James McNeill Whistler
Physical Description
This watercolor on brown prepared board is vertically oriented. The piece
is reputedly a view of a Parisian street (perhaps in the 8th arrondissement), and the perspective is as if the viewer is on the fourth floor of an adjacent
building. The upper two-thirds of the piece show a building-lined street,
curving gently to the left. The buildings are about six stories tall, and
additional rooftops are barely visible in the distance. On the ground
floor of the buildings, there are traces of people, shops, and cafés. In
the bottom third of the work, the road dissolves, but forms suggesting a
few people populate the space.

As Long as I Don't Have to Get Up Before 11:00
Artist
Mark Kostabi
Physical Description
Ink drawing on paper. Black wash ground, with two figures drawn in opaque black ink. A comic figure who is shirtless and in boxers, with his beer belly hanging out, and whose pointy rimmed hat is reminiscent of the scarecrow in the Wizard of Oz, dances at the center of an ominous scene. His right leg has been kicked through a television set that he holds with his right hand. Scissors fall from his left hand towards what looks like a two-slot toaster. A black, horned beast lurks in the background, holding a phone overhead that has two earpieces, but no cradle. The scene is possibly set in a graveyard; the edifice silhouetting behind the scarecrow figure is shaped like a headstone.

Artist
Charles Clough
Physical Description
High-gloss abstract expressionist painting of a large Africa-shaped form in red against black ground. Clough’s unique way of applying paint to the canvas results in a highly articulated and densely textured surface. “In place of the brush and other typical painter's tools, Clough uses an instrument he calls the ‘Big Finger,’ a large balloon-like contraption that he invented to spread poured house enamel on masonite into broad gestural constellations.” (Max Henry, “charles clough,” http://www.artnet.com/magazine_pre2000/reviews/henry/henry2-5-99.asp)
