A densely painted work, this cacnvas portrays a landscape with dramatic clouds. Autumnal colors predominate this rocky landscape with several figures in the middle distance; in the distance a line of trees projects above the horizon line.
This watercolor, chalk and pastel on brown paper depicts a loosely sketched landscape with a dramatic grey-blue cloud taking up most of the composition. A triangular sliver of green and white water interrupts the land and sky from the left below the horizon line. The foreground is rendered in a broad wash of brown watercolor.
The vase has a slightly outward-turned rim and a short neck. The elegantly-shaped bottle flares out to a broad shoulder, then tapers gradually to a slim waist before flaring out once more at the base. The shoulder, mid-belly and base of the vase are decorated with black and white clay-inlaid cloud, crane and butterfly motifs.

Tsuba (Sword guard) with design of dragon among clouds
Artist
Okada Masatoyo
Physical Description
The flat iron plate with quatrefoil shape and the design of a dragon in midst of clouds. It has three holes: one for blade (middle) flanked by two deformed oval-shape holes (for kougai and kozuka). Around the blade hole, there is the carver’s signature. The design of a dragon, among stylized clouds, is intricately carved in high relief; the dragon has almost three-dimensional quality. On the back, the dragon tail, some parts of the body, one claw are peeking from clouds. The dragon coils around the center holes. The rims of the three circles are wavy, as if they are the part of the cloud design. The stoppers on the blade hole edges are made of gold. Some silver inlays are applied on the dragon’s eye blow and some nails.

In this image of bamboo bent under heavy snow the leaves are depicted with vigorous yet controlled strokes of the brush, while the snow is indicated by surrounding areas of blank paper with dark ink, a traditional technique in monochrome ink painting.
Here, caught in a sudden downpour, people rush along the steep hillside. Bamboo bends under the force of wind and rain, and the people in the foreground mimic this downward motion in order to shield their eyes from the water streaming upon them in torrents. Masterfully depicted, the viewer can almost feel the bullets of rain, and sense of sympathy for these unfortunate travelers.
The top of a mountain with trees on top and a very cloudy sky. The top of the mountain appears to be much lighter than the rest of the darker mountain. On the left hand side of the upper portion of mountain there appears to be a mowed section of grass.
A woman dressed in a rose-colored robe with a blue mantle and flowing white veil stands on a silver crescent moon among a bank of dark clouds. A halo of stars encircles her head. She clasps both hands before her. The heads of two putti peak out from beneath her mantle next to her left hip. Her right foot treads upon a long serpent that curves back upon itself with an open mouth.
This winter landscape scene is painted in light pastel colors including, white, blue, pink and gray. The artist has used vigorous brushstrokes and the paint has been applied thickly on the canvas. The scenery is not painted in detail but done in an impressionistic manner.
In the foreground, a snow-covered hill slopes downward from the upper right side of the composition to the lower left. There is one tall tree that frames the scene on the far right and several others clustered on the left. In the middleground area, seen through the branches of these trees, there are factories and buildings of a town. Also, there are figures ice skating on a pond, at the far left of the composition. In the far distance, seen over the edge of the slope, is the skyline of a city, the shapes of skyscrapers silhouetted against a cloudy sky.
Three figures in a boat withstand wind and rain as they navigate river waters. Trees along the banks seem to bend under the force of the wind. Water saturdated ink and washes blur distinctions and imply the extremity of the weather.
This work portrays a dynamic, umbrella-studded view of the University of Michigan Diag, based on sketches Saitô made during his trip to Ann Arbor in the fifties.
This is a watercolor painting in a vertical format painted in bright colors of red, blue, yellow and green. In the foreground, there is a group of men working around the base of a tall pole from which hangs a large red flag or banner. Behind the men is a backdrop of red drapery and to the side, a wooden staircase. There are buildings in the background with yellowish brown walls and green roofs.
The composition is a well-established type: a complex of temple buildings is tucked into a mountainside, on the shore of a broad body of water, with mists rising to obscure the distant peaks. The artist provides a path leading from the viewer’s space to the temple. Two travelers go before us, a hooded figure riding a donkey over a rustic bridge, and another man striding along on foot, further ahead. The temple buildings themselves are hidden behind thick foliage, as if protected from the secular world. Here the forms of the rocky outcroppings, the trees, and even the mountains are starkly outlined, and there are strong contrasts of light and dark. These features suggest that this is a work of by a professional Kanô School artist, probably of the seventeenth century.
