A dark horizontal opening shows three men working and talking. Above is an arched recess, at the top of which is an open window with a plant. Below the large horizontal opening, a chicken stands in the street just below.
Frontispiece, "Eaux-fortes Modernes," The Societe des Aquafortistes"
A rooster standing at the base of a column, engraved with the publication information. Before the base is an arrangement of the chemistry and tools used to create etchings. The Societe des Aquafortistes was founded in 1862 and included several renowned artists of the time - Delacroix, Corot, Millet, Manet, Jongkind, Pissarro, etc. This is the first edition of the regular portfolio published by Cadart to highlight their work.
A painting of a rural, rather secluded homestead. The property is surrounded by woods. There is a woman who is pulling water from a well and child awaiting the arrival of her grandparents. The elder couple has just arrived onto the property of their family, still standing at the threshold of the forest path and the grounds of the home, and are greeted by a small dog. To the right is a simple barn with a thatched roof where a horse and presumably other animals are kept. The yard is full of activity - a group of chicken and a rooster pick at food from the ground while nearby a chicken looks after a group of chicks. To the right of the scene, between the edge of the house and the well are a few duks looking around.
These panels represent six of the twelve months. The panels each have calligraphy and a red seal in one corner. On the top left panel there is bamboo, the bow of the boat with a small lamp attached to it, and a type of water fowl. In the bottom middle panel is a blooming sakura tree and a pheasant. In the bottom left panel is blue and white wisteria ans small sparrows. In the bottom right panel there is a willow slowly coming back to life after winter over a thatched building.
