Tematsu no ike (Tematsu Pond)

Takahashi Hiroaki

In the lower left corner of this tall and narrow print two silohettes appear near a small dock. The surface of a pond stretches out behind them, filling much of the pictorial space. The dark form of a house with a traingular, mountain shapped roof rests in the upper register of the print. The lit windows from the house reflect in the calm yet slightly wavy pond.

Blue-and-green landscape handscroll

Tao Cheng (T'ao Ch'eng)

Among the rolling green mountains, figures in this scroll go about their lives, leading cattle to drink along the riverside and dangling fishing lines over the edge of small boats in hopes of catching something for dinner. Highlights of red pigment add brilliance to a grove of trees near the middle of the scroll. The detail work in the trees is spectacular, with twisted and knotted trunks that seem to refuse to stand upright, but bend against gravity, in some cases revealing networks of tangled roots.

Her face has a broad, open forehead, with wide, slightly arching brows; her eyes are downcast with "s"-shaped upper lids; her nose is straight and long, and her mouth, in a curved Cupid's bow shape, is small but full. Her torso leans slightly to her left, which is balanced by the right tilt of her head. She sits on a double lotus dais with beaded upper and lower rims.
