Physical Description

A collection of abstract landscape and figure with a photographic image. The figure, Christlike in its pose, runs up roughly the middle of the painting, looking also like a road or a path across the bleak landscape. In the upper left is a photographic image of some military trucks and a scaffold tower. Along the left half of the landscape, names of towns are written in the paint.
Pen and ink drawing of nude woman, presumably dead or in the act of dying, stretched between floor and chair, with a man bending over her head and torso. In interior domestic space.
Abstract portrait of an actress, formed by abstract pools of watercolor with only slight detailing laid in after to suggest a bowed head and curved neck.
Gelatin silver print. A man in uniform and heavy coat looks to his right as he stands posed next to a broken sign and broken mannequins in the rubble-filled street of Berlin.
This small watercolor shows the view of an arch by a city waterfront. A wall closes off the left side of the street leading up to the arch, and creates a powerful sense of recession into space leading from the foreground to the monument in the middle distance. Scattered figures inhabit the street. Beyond the arch may be glimpsed the waters of a bay and a hill rising above the far shore.

An angel, holding a scepter in his left hand and making a gesture of speech with his right, interrupts the Virgin at her reading. She kneels on the floor and rests her left hand on an open book placed atop a lectern. A vase with a flowering lily sits on the floor between the angel and the Virgin and a small white dove encircled by a halo hovers between them. The scene unfolds within an elaborate and richly decorated interior that includes a chair and canopied bed in the background.

Architectural ceiling boss with four faces, probably from the Church of St. Andrew at Cullompton
Artist
Artist Unknown, England
Physical Description
This ceiling boss features four faces with traces of paint that are arranged in a radial pattern with the crowns of their heads converging on a single, central point. Two of the faces are female, identifiable by the wimples worn on their heads, while the other two, wearing small pointed caps and sporting beards, are male. The symmetrical regularity of the piece is counterbalanced by subtle asymmetries introduced by differences in detail and the sequence of facial types.
Three figures stand in a wooded clearing in the foreground of this small watercolor. A view opens out in the middle ground over a bay with a city descending from the adjacent hills to the water. A volcano smolders in the distance on the opposite side of the bay, a thick plume of smoke rising from its peak.

This, in turn, is capped by an echinus decorated with three fleurons and vine rinceau on each face as well as four projecting volutes also decorated with rinceau and fleurons. Originally the bell of the capital had two tiers of acanthus leaves, but the capital has been cropped below the top of the first tier and the tips of the leaves, which once curved outward from the surface of the capital, have been sheared off.
