This oval-shaped vase has an irregularly shaped mouth. The decoration, which consists of numerous layers of glass, has green and brown glass in the bottom third; a swriling brown and cream glass the overlays from the foot up to the lip of the vessel, and finally a horizontal pattern of warm brown dots (which are pulled into bands around the widest part of the vessel) that begins at the top.

This brocade makes use of gold thread, creating a composite that shimmers. the warm, muted tones of the gold are matched in color selections of light blue, dark blue, yellow, mauve, silvery white, and muted green threads. Two textile fragments have been sewn into a gold background. On the left is a rectangular segment of a blue and green dragon among clouds. The right segment is a floral decoration of a variety of plants and colors, interspersed with horizontal lines.

One of Four Panels of Textile Fragments: Obi Brocades

The colorful strips of brocade at the top and bottom of this panel feature a woven design of ivy and peonies entwined around cartwheels, bamboo, and stylized diamonds. A wide rectangular fragment of an obi (sash for kimono) lie at the center of the textile. It is an almost abstract design of boats tossed in a frothy sea. The warm, muted tones of the gold are matched in color selections of mauve, and muted purple, blue, and green threads.

A scholar sits in a relaxed posture at his desk looking at cut plum blossoms in a white vase; before him is an empty sheet of paper and ink stone, and by his side an attendant is boiling water for tea. A crane tucks her head and leg to keep herself warm in the cold winter air. The scholar seems to be contemplating a subject to be drawn or written, perhaps related to the flowers.

The Daibutsu (Great Buddha) at Kamakura

The daibutsu, or giant buddha, statue takes up the bulk of the pictorial space. Curving upwards and towards the statue is a large pine. At the feet of the green hued daibutsu statue are three women of different generations: a young girl, an adult woman, and an elderly woman. Although a few clouds hover in the sky, the sun appears to be shining brightly, casting some shadows of nearby trees into the picture.

Snow falls during a night scene in Ueno Park, located in the Tokyo area. Weary, snow-heavy travelers trek through the scene. One may be heading into a shop to have something warm to eat, while the other heads towards a small bridge and a red torii gate topped with snow. A pine tree arches in from the left corner and arches over the scene, framing the park against the gray, snow-dotted sky.
