- Jina venerated by a monk and a royal devotee from a Digambara Jain manuscript
- Artist
- Artist Unknown, India, Sirohi School
- Physical Description

- Engraved Powder Horn
- Artist
- Artist Unknown
- Physical Description
- Animal horn engraved with the Royal Coat of Arms of the United Kingdom, in which a crowned lion and a chained unicorn supporting a shield stand above a banner with the motto “dieu et mon droit” (which directly translated from French means “God and my right” referring to the monarch’s divine right to govern which has been used as the motto of the British monarch since it was adopted by Henry V (1413-1422)). The shield consists of four quadrants: the first quadrant contains four lions, the second contains three fleurs de lis, the third contains a mermaid and a harp, the fourth contains three lions and a stag or dog-like animal. Surrounding the shield is a belt or garter upon which is emblazoned “Honi soit qui mal y pense” which means “evil unto they who think evil,” the motto of the Order of the Knights of the Garter, an ancient exclusive British order consisting of 25 members who were selected by the king of England. Near the base, the horn is engraved with a cityscape of Philadelphia from the harbor with numerous buildings, towers, boats and ships, and a man with a rifle shooting at a stag or lion in the distance.

- Etude du tableau de la dame de Charité
- Artist
- Jean Baptiste Raphaël Urbain Massard
- Physical Description
- This black and white engraving features a portrait of a young woman in a roundel in the upper portion of the print. The young woman’s face is shown in three-quarter profile. Her hair is pulled back and her head is partially covered in a hooded cloak that appears to be bordered with fur. In the lower register of the print there is an illustration framed by a decorative wreath. The illustration features a bedroom scene populated by several figures. A figure lies on the bed on the right of this image while several figures attend to the bed-ridden figure, including a woman whose costume mirrors that of the woman in the roundel above this image. In this image she is accompanied by a child whom she embraces as she gestures toward the figure on the bed.

- Seated Male Figure
- Artist
- Artist Unknown, African, Yombe Peoples Democratic Republic of the Congo
- Physical Description
- Small, carved male figure, seated atop a block, with legs crossed. The naturalism with which the expressive face is carved, the high crested coiffure (or chiefly cap?) and the progressive foreshortening of the body show the importance given to the head in Yombe aesthetics. The figure's eyes are mirrored glass, and the upper body, face and head are studded with brass tacks. A slight vertical crack can be seen at the figure's sternum.
- The Yombe figure was identified for UMMA by Allen Roberts and Mary (Polly) Nooter Roberts. There was a discrepency regarding the dating of the piece: the export paperwork said "circa 1830", but the dealer's catalogue said early 19th c. When asked to help resolve the dating, Polly Nooter Roberts replied: "As for the Yombe figure, I can tell you with certainty that it is NOT early 20th century, and is definitely from the 19th century, if not earlier. I cannot confirm the 1830 date, but I would be more inclined to believe that than the early 20th century. So, I think you can confidently say 19th century, and perhaps you can go ahead and use the paperwork that says 1830 since that was supplied with it." See e-mail to Carole McNamara, 1/12/00.

- BOTTOM: River Landscape with Four Men Encamping on a Rock (Flußlandschaft mit vier auf einem Fels lagernden Männern), sheet 5 from the folio 12 Views of Normandy (XII Vues de la Normandie)
- Artist
- Franz Edmund Weirotter
- Physical Description
- 5 physical tears on left edge, indicating the original book bindings.
- TOP IMAGE. A river appears in lower right corner, traveling from "front" to "back" of image. Along its banks two distant windmills occur, indicating Holland as the location. A distant boat with sails, and a closer group of three row boats on river. The closer group has thee figures bent over their work, which looks like hauling nets. In the center is a nearly barren twisted tree, at whose base is a rough hut of blanks and branches. A path from the bottom right bends up and around the hut and tree, on which a small group of three are poised (two sitting figures appear to listen to a standing third) and a single man travels further into the distance. Houses with thatched roofs, some patched with boards, appear on the right of the image, along the riverbanks into the distance.
- BOTTOM IMAGE. A river curves gently back from the bottom right. Boulders surround the bank on the left half of the image, with scraggly trees and vegetation. Several boulders stretch out into the water, and on one of these, on the bottom right, is a group of perhaps three viewers. Two are seated, and appear to be listening to a third, who is standing and pointing to the right. Hills can be seen in the bottom right corner, stretching into the distance along the river.
