Early Stage of Proposal for General Mills Commission (Egyptian Beauty)

Jene Highstein

Heavily worked and reworked pencil drawing on large square of grid paper. Form is an ovoid shape with longitudinal and lateral lines, thinner than it is tall, fit into a rectangular box that represents the block of stone to be carved. At the bottom right of the sketched image, Highstein has noted the dimensions (7’ x 7’ x 2’) x 7. Seven blocks of granite at 2’ x 2’ x 7’ were meant to be stacked and carved into the proposed shape.

Do yu Get it

Martin Johnson

7-sided frame made of reclaimed wood moulding and slats nailed together and backed with strips of green felt, possibly from a pool table. Gold wire traces the wood frame, and is accented with a fuzz ball or googly eye at each corner. A toy car is placed on the gold wire “track” at bottom center; car racing flag stickers attached to the frame in a couple places. Three pieces of thread are strung horizontally across the frame, a “spider web” attached to top two lines with puffy paint. A wood (?) cutout of a smiling joker mouth hung from web by wire.

Progress of Beauty 2

Mark Kostabi

Line drawing in felt tip marker on ivory ~ 10x13” paper with shading. Woman’s arm and dress filled in completely with black, as well as a pane of the stained glass window that she holds. The wall, pitcher, parts of the woman’s head and shoulder covering and bodice, and cash register have been modeled in stylized “half tone” of zigzag separating white and black; shadows take the form of dense curlicues. The tablecloth bears splotches of black ink that were possibly made by blowing air on wet ink through a straw. The map has been filled in with ink drips and splatters.

As Long as I Don't Have to Get Up Before 11:00

Mark Kostabi

Ink drawing on paper. Black wash ground, with two figures drawn in opaque black ink. A comic figure who is shirtless and in boxers, with his beer belly hanging out, and whose pointy rimmed hat is reminiscent of the scarecrow in the Wizard of Oz, dances at the center of an ominous scene. His right leg has been kicked through a television set that he holds with his right hand. Scissors fall from his left hand towards what looks like a two-slot toaster. A black, horned beast lurks in the background, holding a phone overhead that has two earpieces, but no cradle. The scene is possibly set in a graveyard; the edifice silhouetting behind the scarecrow figure is shaped like a headstone.

Several thin coats of blue-gray acrylic paint have been applied to primed linen canvas whose weave was altered by removing threads at more or less regular intervals. Untitled (Dollhouse); from the 2002 Peter Norton Family Christmas Project

Yinka Shonibare

Dollhouse replica of a two-storey Victorian-style flat in the East End of London. The façade is red brick with white molding. The upper storey has two tall windows that face onto the street; the door into the flat is on the left, and to the right of it is a large bay window. The split-level interior holds a bedroom and parlor, both of which are decorated with wallpaper and furnishings, including cabinets, chairs, tables, fireplaces, and a canopy bed. Reproductions of paintings by Shonibare and Jean-Honoré Fragonard hang on the walls. A seal on the right-facing outside wall reads: “Yinka Shonibare, artist, lives here.”
