Carpet Menders, Paris

James McNeill Whistler

Three women sit just inside the doorway of a building shown frontally to the viewer. The doorway is framed by windows on either side within an archietctural framework that connects the windows and door with a dado under the windows. The women have a large piece of fabric laid over their laps on which they are working. The woman at the left is angled so that she is looking into the room; the other two look out at the viewer. The profile of a fourth woman is visible in the central window on the left side of the door.

Breton Women Going to the Pardon of Plougastel

Charles Cottet

This painting, done in thick brushstrokes, shows a group of women gathered on the grass in a wooded area. There are six figures, four seated and two standing, and they fill the foreground of the composition. They are grouped in a semi-circle, however, there is no communication or eye contact between the figures. The women are wearing traditional Breton costumes with brightly colored aprons, caps and sashes. They have bright white collars and caps with purple, burgundy and green ribbons.

Conversation under the Statue, Luxembourg Gardens

James McNeill Whistler

In the lower left corner, two women are seen seated out of doors conversing in a park-like setting. In the middle distance is a large sculpture on a raised pedestal. Grouped around the sculpture are other small gatherings of people in conversation. Behind the figures and sculpture is the loose indication of trees.

Illumination de la Grande Cascade de Saint Cloud

Philbert-Louis Debucourt

This colored etching with aquatint depicts a night scene of a large illuminated cascade of fountains. A raised architectural structure with three arches is placed in the center left of the composition. A series of cascades descend from this structure and lead into a pool of water decorated with a series of geyser fountains spouting water upward. Many small groups of figures in elegant costumes are gathered around the water. Their costumes appear to be hand painted in pink, blue, white and black wash. The upper third of the image is devoted to the dark night sky.

The Pantheon, from the Terrace of the Luxembourg Gardens

James McNeill Whistler

The balustrade of a public park walkway seen at a slight distance acts as a foil for several figures grouped in front of the balustrade. To the left, two women stand talking while a child, with her back facing the viewer looks between the balusters towards the dome of a building in the distance beyond some trees. Too the right of the composition, a seated man and a woman shown in profile are grouped. Two ornamental urns decorate the balustrade.

Street Scene, Paris [Rue Laffitte (?) ]

James McNeill Whistler

This watercolor on brown prepared board is vertically oriented. The piece

is reputedly a view of a Parisian street (perhaps in the 8th arrondissement), and the perspective is as if the viewer is on the fourth floor of an adjacent

building. The upper two-thirds of the piece show a building-lined street,

curving gently to the left. The buildings are about six stories tall, and

additional rooftops are barely visible in the distance. On the ground

floor of the buildings, there are traces of people, shops, and cafés. In

the bottom third of the work, the road dissolves, but forms suggesting a

few people populate the space.
