Beige Obi with wax-resist overall patterns of rust stripes, interrupted by wax-resist and embroidered designs of floral scrolls

Minagawa Gekka

The obi is made of plain silk, on which beige and brown stripes are pattern-dyed. Scrolls of exotic flowers and leaves are hand painted with orange and black color, and embroidered with metallic threads. These plant designs are located on two parts of the obi; when wearing, one will appear in front, and other will appear on the back bow. There is a hand-painted artist’s seal of Chinese character “moon” on one end of the obi.

Nagoya-style Obi with wax-resist overall pattern of crackled pink-on-white, interrupted by wax-resist and embroidered designs of colorful tropical orchids

Minagawa Gekka

The obi is made of satin damask silk woven with “flower in tortoise-shell” patterns. “Cracked ice” pattern in red is dyed with wax-resist technique. Orchid flowers, leaves, ginger leaves, and ferns are hand painted in white, yellow, black, red, and green. Silver threads are embroidered in the rim of orchid flowers and other plants; more colored metallic and velvet threads are applied. The “cracked ice” patterns are broader adjacent to plants and red dye outlines them; that suggests that the artist designed flowers and foliage before the wax-resist application. The plant designs are located on two parts of the obi; when wearing, one will appear in front, and other will appear on the back bow.

Ascetics with dogs in landscape

Artist Unknown Mughal Workshop, Uttar Pradesh

The drawing is mounted on an album page of a yellowish color flecked with gold. There is a narrow frame in a slighter lighter tone outlined with gold and red lines. The main figure sits facing the viewer and is in a long robe. An emaciated, nearly nude figure faces him squatting with his hand on one knee. Another ascetic stands and offers obeisance to the master. One dog rolls around in front of him and another on a leash walks behind him. There is a clump of bushes to the lower left and a tree to the upper left tops a diagonal leading down to the right with a large group of twisted trees.

Plate with gourd and vine design (one of five with 1964/1.100 and 102-104)

Artist Unknown, Nabeshima ware, Japan

The circular, smaller white porcelain plate has a design of gourds, flowers, vines and leaves around the rim. The gourds are outlined with blue underglaze and colored with yellow overglaze. Blue underglaze and transparent green overglaze are used for the leaves. The flowers and vines are drawn with red. The red enamel is worn off from some of the tendrils, a characteristic of 18th century Nabeshima. The reverse side has four clustered jewel or treasure motifs with four bows and streamers repeated three times. On the shallow foot, bold lines are drawn in a row like a comb. The design on the back is all drawn with blue underglaze. (Referencce: Becker, Sister Johanna. “A Group of Nabeshima Porcelain.")

Plate with three vase design (one of five with 1964/1.100-103)

Artist Unknown, Nabeshima ware, Japan

A circular, smaller white porcelain plate. On the upper surface, three vases, similar in shape, are shown overlapping diagonally in blue background. The two outer vases run off the plate’s rim. They are outlined in underglaze blue and are against a painted light-blue background. The left vase is covered with a white glaze (which left unpainted) under a red key-fret design. The center vase is totally covered with a white crackle pattern done in blue underglaze line. The right vase has a design of evenly-spaced red flowers. Precise flat bases are combined with a rather awkward suggestion of a three-dimensional view of the lips. The back has a triple representation of peony buds surrounded by fine branching stems and leaves. On the shallow foot, bold lines are drawn in a row like a comb. The design on the back is all drawn with blue underglaze. (Referencce: Becker, Sister Johanna. “A Group of Nabeshima Porcelain.”)

Shiva dancing

Artist Unknown, Nepal

Shiva dances upon the back of a dwarf figure crouching on his stomach. This pose is not as typical as some of his other dancing postures. He dances on one leg extended straight down with the other straight up almost making a straight line. His torso and head are thrown back. He only has two hands, one holding a drum at his knee and the other a khatvanga, a club made of a bone with a skull at the top. He wears jewelry including a belt with pendent loops and tassels, necklaces including a heavy long necklace, armlets and bracelets and an elaborate crown organized with a number of peaks. On his forehead we find the third eye, another identifier of the god Shiva. A dense circular background consisting of three inner rows of round elements, the middle one may be composed of skulls, and an outer row of flame-like elements surrounds the whole figure, animating the image into a whirl of the dance. The whole sits on a circular base, plain with a flanged bottom section decorated with a lotus petal motif.

Tao Yuanming Appreciating Chrysanthemums

Ni Tian (Ni T'ien)

Pastoral poet Tao Yuanming (372–427) and a boy-servant bearing chrysanthemums on his back are shown. Two pine trees dominate the composition. Tao Yuanming’s forward gaze and slightly hunched posture exhibit his full inner exhilaration when chrysanthemums were collected. The subtle smile on the poet’s face seems also to reflect a moment of transcendence.

Calligraphy: Watching Ducks on a Spring Morning

Nukina Kaioku

In this monumental scroll, Nukina Kaioku has brushed a Chinese poem of his own composition, on the enduring theme of nature as refreshment for the spirit. Note his masterful variation of thick and thin strokes, wet and dry ink, stately and rapid movement.

The verses may be tentatively rendered into English as follows:

Mandarin ducks enjoy the fresh water; their graceful forms glow as they pass through channels in the reeds.

Pushing beyond the thickets [to the open pond], they call to one another again and again in the dawn.

A crimson mist breaks through gaps in the glade, its glow warming hidden nests.

Waking up with nothing to do, [I came here] to playfully row among the spring waves.
