The Young Tree
Artist
James McNeill Whistler
Physical Description
Two children sit on the ground next to a young tree that stands supported by a stake. The tree's foliage fills the image at the upper right. A fence in the upper part of the image separates the children from buildings in the distance, seen through the tree's branches. Presumably the children are in a part adjacent to a residential neighborhood.

Title
Limehouse
Artist
James McNeill Whistler
Physical Description
Seen from the water, which dominates the foreground, a barge with a standing man and woman occupy the middle distance. Beyond to the left a three-masted ship is in dry-dock, separated from other buildings and activities on the right by a small inlet of water. Behind the barge to the right is a complex of clapboard buildings; at the far right is another sailing ship pulled out of water. A group of men with flaming torches are tarring the exterior of the hull. This is a view of a busy dockyard along the river Thames under a blustery, cloudy sky.

James McNeill Whistler
Physical Description
A tall post to right of center bisects the composition. To the right is scaffolding and a platform. In the foreground, a figure of a standing man has been erased from the plate. The foreground is at the water's edge and while in the distance at the horizon are the masts of ships and smoke coming from a chimney to the right of the tall post.

Title
In the Restaurant
Artist
Ernst Kirchner
Physical Description
Artist's sketch from life; Kirchner developed a rapid, stroke-oriented (as opposed to detail-oriented) sketch style when out in the world. Appears to be (though not with certainty) two men conversing on the left, a man accompanied by a woman in a very tall hatt in the center/center-right, and a figure in the far right bottom corner foreground leaning toward a surface (a piano? cleaning a table?). Background and tables are suggested with various lines, but unclear.
