Marcel Duchamp Art Medal 28/100, based on Sink Stopper (Bouche Évier), 1964
Artist
Marcel Duchamp
Physical Description
A small, thin silver disk. In the center are seven convex circular protrusions (one in the center surrounded symmetrically by the six others) that appear like balls set within individual depressions. There are other less uniform depressions surrounding the center design. An incised line runs around the circumference.
A middle age man in a powdered wig is shown in a bust-length portrait against an undifferentiated blue background. In addition to the wig, he is wearing a mauve silk coat, orange waistcoat, and ruffled white shirt. His shoulders are in profile to the viewer, but the sitter turns his head and looks in the direction of the viewer. The expression is one of great intelligence, wit and even humor.
Ink and gouache drawing in black, gray and white on tan paper with tall vertical structure at center of composition rendered in a series of quick vertical and diagonal lines.
