Title
Scene in the Catskills
Artist
Thomas Cole
Physical Description
This landscape painting depicts a rocky hillside beneath a blue sky and towering cloud formations. In the foreground area, a stream flows between boulders and cascades over rocks. There is a large square boulder with the roots and stump of a dead tree. The right side of the painting has green vegetation along the edege of the stream and tall green-leafed trees further back on the side of the hill. On the left, beyond the hill, there is a glimpse of far distant mountains. This scene is painted in warm tones of green and brown in a realistic manner. Patches of sunlight highlight areas of the hillside, boulders and the stream.

Sunrise at Benten Shrine, Suzaki Cape
Artist
Katsushika Hokusai
Physical Description
Two geisha (itinerant musicians) are shown strolling in the countryside, with the roof of Benten Shintô shrine in the distance. The backdrop is the rising sun—the give-away that this is a New Year’s print—seen over distant mountains and a calm bay. One woman stoops to empty the ashes from her pipe, while the other draws her kimono closely about her. A poem lies just above the rising sun in the top left register of the morning sky.

A Sunset in Ireland
Artist
Sir Francis Seymour Haden
Physical Description
A river starts at the bottom of the composition, taking up the foreground, and then winds back into the middle of the composition. A tree on the left bank of the river hangs down over the edge, its leaves almost touching the water. Reflections of the trees and banks can be seen along the edges of the river. In the background is a more heavily wooded area, and some birds can be seen in the sky. One bird is located in the middle of the sky, while a cluster of faintly depicted birds can be seen on the right. The edges of the composition mostly fade into simple hatching and line work, especially along the banks of the river in the bottom corners of the page, and where the trees meet the edges of the page on the left and right.

Views of Ten Tea Houses: Takanawa
Artist
Torii Kiyonaga
Physical Description
In this print, one of a series of ten views of "tea house" districts, Kiyonaga has depicted two women and a child strolling along the shore by the sea wall at Takanawa. A woman at left shields her eyes from the summer sun with her fan, and has her obi tied in front of her. The younger looking companion holding her hand wears a gaily flowered kimono, which has fallen wide open. A child walks with them, gesturing to the side of the print. The front portion of a boat and wall of a town or temple lie behind them.
This is an especially well-preserved print, where even the indigo blue is still visible.

Title
Christ Healing the Deaf-Mute
Artist
Philippe de Champaigne
Physical Description
This painting depicts a river passing through a wooded landscape as human figures, dwarfed by the towering trees, move along its banks. The majestic landscape dominates the painting, but a group of four men in the right foreground also competes for attention since the bright, saturated primary colors of their robes stand out sharply against the muted tonalities of their surroundings. One of the men, wearing a blue cloak, places his left finger in the mouth of a man kneeling before him and touches the side of his head with his right hand. A third man leans forward to touch the kneeling figure's shoulder while the fourth, in a magnificent red cloak, raises his hands in astonishment.
