Jupiter and Mercury in the House of Philemon and Baucis
Artist
Hendrik Goudt
Physical Description
Two lamps provide the only source of light in this nighttime interior and the scene is full of dark shadows and areas highlighted by white. Two men are seated at a table- one is a bearded man wearing long robes and the other has a staff and a hat with wings. They are looking at a woman, wearing a cloth headdress and a long dress, who stands before them. On the left is a man entering through a doorway. The features of the room are shown in great detail including the assortment of food, hanging vegetables and baskets, a wall tapestry, the rough wood planking and decorative designs on the bedding. Title
Tintern Abbey
Artist
James Ward
Physical Description
A large, Gothic ruin dominates the scene. The west portal of a large church stands with full light, from the left, illuminating its portal. Along its second story ivy grows across the facade while trees cluster in the L-shaped angle toward the right and other vegetation is evident along the roofline of the structure. Several women enter through the main doorway of the building. A stone wall encircles the structure and two houses occupy the land immediately to the left of the church ruin. In the foreground a lane leads past the church with a man leading a black horse and a running hound in the right foreground, and a figure with its back to the viewer is visible at the left foreground. Behind the scene, dark, wind-swept clouds indicate a recent storm that has now passed, allowing golden light to suffuse the landscape.

Under the Lamp (Sous la Lampe)
Artist
Albert Dubois-Pillet
Physical Description
This is a tondo painting with a circular frame that is painted in tones of violet. It is a still-life scene that shows a lamp, resting on a table, set against a green wall. On the wall behind the lamp is a painting, but only the lower right-hand corner is visible due to the sharp curve of the circular format of the painting. On the table, beside the lamp, is a piece of paper and an ink well in the shape of a human figure. The base of the lamp has a curvilinear profile and the pleated shade is painted in bright colors of orange, pink, green and yellow. Both the scene and the frame are painted with short, dot-like brushstrokes.
