A horizontal view of a riverside congested with buildings and shipping on both sides. The river recedes to the center right; at the far distance is the billowing smoke of a steam tug and the dome of a distant church. In the foreground are low barges with figures standing or working. Along the lefthand bank are warehouses and other buildings, many with signs indicating that the proprietor makes sails, rope, etc.

The painting depicts a group of American settlers attempting to defend themselves against attack by a band of Native Americans. A covered wagon pulled by two horses is at the center of the composition; at left, two Native Americans attack the wagon with war clubs and tomahawks; a figure on the lead horse points a pistol directly at the head of one of his attackers, while a figure at the rear of the wagon shoots another attacker. At right other warriors on horseback ride past the train shooting arrows and wielding tomahawks.

A deep covered passageway dominates the composition. At the near end of the passage, to the right side stand a woman and young girl, both with heads covered and looking at the viewer. Looking down the passageway, light catches the timbered ceiling and figures can be seen walking at the far end, silhouetted against the bright light in the square or street beyond. A lantern hangs above the entrance at the near end of the passage.
