Inscribed in pencil on upper right: the two moldings are entirely gilded and what I specially noticed was the way the carving was seperated (sic) from the ground, not only being undercut deeply but as a rule entirely cut away from the shell proper. effect of light and shade produced is stunning In pencil, l.l.: this panel is in glazed terra cotta / white and blue as most of lucca / della robbia's are ; ground of carving / 7/8" back of face of/ moulding
Sketch #1 inscribed: Oak chest in Cluny Museum Sketch #2 moulding inscribed: this moulding is merely engraved, almost no modelling and has splendid effect Sketch #3 inscribed: Moulding on another chest. Also kept very flat and practically no modelling at all Sketch #4 inscribed: this is reversed at the other side of center which has a flat leaf carved on. All ornament is very flat almost engraving.
