Title
A Group of Eight Landscapes on Four Sheets
Artist
Franz Edmund Weirotter
Physical Description
TOP IMAGE: A river scene, with the river and scenery in the bottom 1/3 of image, and the skyfilling the top 2/3rds. A boat with two fisherman near shore in bottom left corner, and nother small pair of fishermen appear on bank in bottom center. An architectural structure - walls with perhaps dwellings on top - stretches along the riverbank on the left.
BOTTOM IMAGE. A river appears in the bottom right corner and streches into the central background. A path tops the left-hand bank, on which a group of three travelers, facing the viewer, walk in the bottom left corner of image. Two carry walking sticks. In the center stands a medieval pilgrimage marker, near whose base is a traveler in large hat with walking stick. Trees line the river on both the right and left sides, and in the left grove is a partially hidden thatched house.

Vanitas (Still Life), with globe, skull, candle, tazza, and covered cup; Willem Claesz Heda

Title
Vanitas (Still Life), with globe, skull, candle, tazza, and covered cup
Artist
Willem Claesz Heda
Physical Description
This remarkable still life depicts a table crowded with, among other things, a gilded covered goblet, a wide saucer-shaped silver tazza, a celestial globe painted with images of the constellations, a skull wearing a laurel wreath, and an extinguished candle, all rendered in exquisite detail with careful attention paid to the effects of light and texture. While the arrangement of objects may appear casual, the composition is artfully balanced along two diagonal axes centered on the two cups that lie crossed on the table. The repetition of ovoid shapes throughout the painting and the monochrome tonality with its restricted range of hues and values, a hallmark of Heda's style, assures the seamless integration of the sundry objects into a unified whole.
