Fragment from a Markendeya Purana scroll: Vishnu on the pipal leaf; Artist Unknown, India, Northern Andhra Pradesh

Title
Fragment from a Markendeya Purana scroll: Vishnu on the pipal leaf
Artist
Artist Unknown, India, Northern Andhra Pradesh
Physical Description
The blue four-armed Vishnu is shown lying on a gigantic pipal leaf with his left leg crossed over his right leg; as his female consort gently strokes his leg, he awakens from a long sleep. Another woman fans him. From his navel sprouts a lotus, bearing the four-headed creator god, Brahma, and rishis or sages appear in the upper branches of the pipal tree. Vishnu has four arms carrying a discus and a conch in his back hands and the lower left arm is extended pointing towards the women at his feet while the lower right am is cross towards his stomach.
The iconography is further compounded by the image in the lower register of a tortoise at the bottom of the ocean of milk, bearing a mountain on his back. The tortoise is in fact Kurma, another manifestation of Vishnu, supporting the cosmic axis. Elephants have gathered to pay homage to him, while in a small inset at right, a worshipper pays homage to Shiva, Vishnu, and Brahma. A large red figure faces the scene to the right accompanied by small blue figures to his sides as if behind him. Two sages, one horse-headed, are to the upper right.

Physical Description
This unfinished painted study depicts a crowd of figures gathered around three richly dressed men and a woman and child, who appear on a flight of stairs near the entrance to a large building decorated with classical columns and pilasters. An elderly bald man wearing a red cloak trimmed with ermine kneels with his head bowed at the top of the stairs before a kneeling woman who holds an infant in her right arm. Another man wearing a turban decorated with a large feather stands behind the kneeling man and holds a gold censer hanging from a chain in his left hand. A third richly dressed man stands at the bottom of the stairs with his back turned toward the viewer. A number of other figures crowd around this central group from the sides. A large ox sits in the right foreground with a donkey standing behind it.

Title
A River Landscape
Artist
Jan Brueghel
Physical Description
This gouache and ink drawing on paper is of a river, many people, and sailboats. In the foreground of the right side there is a tall, leafy tree. To the immediate left of the tree is a group of people varying in age. In the right background there are buildings.
The drawing depicts a river with at least a dozen boats of various sizes in the fore- and middle grounds. The ships range in size from a larger boat with a single tall mast, to smaller boats with and without sails, including a small boat in the lower left corner poled by a man standing in the stern that seems to be ferrying a group of people across the river. Many of the boats are docked and are being loaded or unloaded. The spires and rooftops of towns are visible on both riverbanks.
