The painting depicts a group of American settlers attempting to defend themselves against attack by a band of Native Americans. A covered wagon pulled by two horses is at the center of the composition; at left, two Native Americans attack the wagon with war clubs and tomahawks; a figure on the lead horse points a pistol directly at the head of one of his attackers, while a figure at the rear of the wagon shoots another attacker. At right other warriors on horseback ride past the train shooting arrows and wielding tomahawks.
This painting shows a scene set in a courtyard with high white walls that is open to the sky. Beyond the wall there is flowering vegetation, tall trees and a tower with a balustrade with keyhole shaped openings. There are two clay pots resting on top of the wall and an oriental style carpet hanging over one side. Within this courtyard, there are three women who are looking at two small leopards that wear metal chains and stand in a keyhole shaped opening of the far right wall. The women, grouped together on the far left side, are wearing 19th century Moroccan dress, including richly embroidered, garments, headscarves and shoes. There is bright sunlight streaming into the room which creates shadows on the walls and floor.

This landscape painting depicts a rocky hillside beneath a blue sky and towering cloud formations. In the foreground area, a stream flows between boulders and cascades over rocks. There is a large square boulder with the roots and stump of a dead tree. The right side of the painting has green vegetation along the edege of the stream and tall green-leafed trees further back on the side of the hill. On the left, beyond the hill, there is a glimpse of far distant mountains. This scene is painted in warm tones of green and brown in a realistic manner. Patches of sunlight highlight areas of the hillside, boulders and the stream.
A shepherdess stands between two cows who are grazing at the center of the image. In the foreground is the indication of a rough track leading towards the distance at left. At the right is a woman bending over beneath a tree.
Seen from a distance, the Little Putney bridge is visible with its wooden piers. The left bank is not drawn, but on the right bank can be seen a number of buildings and the tower of a church.
Two horses, seen from behind, stand in front of a shed-like structure. On the threshold and partly shadowed to the left stand two figures, a man in an apron and an youth holding a bucket upside down. On the right, closer to the viewer is a whetstone; on the far left of the composition is a rain barrel.
This square of fabric illustrates the tie-dye technique, with dots of fabric gathered into a tight bunch and dyed contrasting colors. The bunching threads are still in place.
