- The Combination that Will Win the War
- Artist
- Adolph Treidler
- Physical Description
- Text: The Combination that Will Win the War - Every piece of work done in this plant has a direct bearing on the outcome of the war. Our finished product goes to France. The men who face for us weariness, hardships, death, depend upon us. Our work here, fits their work over there, like a cog in a giant machine. Without our product they are helpless. With it they are invincible. They fight with what we make. We are their resource and reliance, the American workman and the American soldier, the combination that will win the war. - Issued By Ordnance Department U.S. Army

- Leeuwenhoek and the "Little Animals", from "The History of Medicine"
- Artist
- Robert Thom
- Physical Description
- Antony van Leewenhoek, draper of seventeenth-century Delft, Holland, in his spare time retired to his "closet" to observe the wonders of the microscopic world through tiny lenses he laboriously ground and mounted. He was the first to report having seen "animalcules" - protozoa and bacteria - and to confirm by direct observation circulation of the blood. Though 200 years elapsed before practical application of his discoveries contributed to medicine, his work laid foundations for modern medicine's tremendous century-long onslaught against diseases caused by bacteria and other microbiologic entities - a world-wide campaign which has resulted in saving of millions of lives.

- Text: State Council of Defense - (banner in eagle's mouth) State Sovereignty National Union - Cooperating with - The College of Agriculture, University of Illinois. The United States Department of Agriculture. The State Department of Agriculture - Illinois Seed Corn Administration - Advisory Committee - E.D. Funk, Chairman, Bloomington, Ill. H.J. Sconce, Sidell, Ill. John M. Crebs, Carmi, I--. Frank J. Frather, Williamsville, Ill. Chas. Adkins, Springfield, Ill. W.F. Handschin, University of Ill. - Seed Corn Administrator - WM. G. Eckhardt, 120 West Adams Street, Chicago, Ill. - "Son! Do You Know That Your Seed Corn Will Grow?" - Get Your Seed Corn Now - The seed corn situation is the worst in the history of the State. If wheat or oats fail, we can plant corn and grown a paying crop. When corn planting time comes you must have good seed, or fail. Hundreds of farmers have put away corn not a kernel of which will grow. Damp weather in October; immature corn; and early hard freezing has killed it. Test your seed corn. Know it will grow. Help yourself and help each other. Prepare the seed bed well. Don't plant corn too deep. Help yourself--don't depend upon others. - Corn Is Illinois' Greatest Crop - No greater mistake can be made by the farmers of the Corn Belt than to reduce materially the area in corn. The system of farming and the crops that you have proven good and most profitable for the past twenty years are those that should be followed and grown this year. If you are in need of seed corn, or if you have a surplus that might be used to help someone else, consult___________ - Prices For Corn - (price list) - Corn germinating 70-79% will be used only as a last resort, except in case of exceptionally desirable corn.

- James Lind: Conqueror of Scurvy, from "The History of Medicine"
- Artist
- Robert Thom
- Physical Description
- Surgeon of Britian's Royal Navy aboard H.M.S. Salisbury, in the English Channel in 1747, James Lind conducted a series of clinical experiments that definitely proved citrus fruits or their juices could cure scurvy, dread dietary-deficiency disease that killed a million seamen between 1600 and 1800. Dr. Lind's work, at sea, in Edinburgh, and at Haslar Naval Hospital, plus his three books, on scurvy on care of sailors' health, and on tropical diseases, had much to do with reforming naval health practices, saving lives both on sea and land, and shaping destinies of nations, as world commerce increased.
